If you’re looking into building a deck, one of the most important steps in the process is selecting the right deck building contractors. It might sound like an easy task, but there are a number of steps you should go through to ensure you’ve properly vetted any potential contractor you’re going to work with.
With this in mind, here are a few tips to help you choose the right company to serve as your deck builders in North Carolina:
- Ask for recommendations: Do you have any friends or family members who have recently had decks built or had their decks refinished? If so, get their feedback about the contractors they worked with. Personal recommendations are always going to be reliable, because someone you know and trust isn’t going to recommend a contractor with whom they had a bad experience. Plus, people you know can give you an inside perspective into what it was like to work with the contractors.
- Do some online research: Check online review sites like Angie’s List, Yelp or Google Reviews to find some reviews from people who have worked with deck builders in your area before. Keep in mind that there are some reviews that may have been paid for, and that not all negative reviews provide an accurate reflection of the company’s work. Definitely take trends in reviews into consideration, but personal recommendations are always going to be more valuable than internet reviews. You should also be sure to browse the contractor’s website, assuming they have one.
- Talk to the contractor: Give the contractor a call and talk to them a bit about your job. See if they’ll give you any references, and discuss the scope of your project to make sure it’s possible based on their service offerings. Schedule an in-person consultation.
- Meet in person: It’s always a good idea to have at least one in-person meeting before you start working with a contractor. This will give you a good sense of the relationship you’ll be able to have with the contractor during the job, and also give you a better sense of whether or not the contractor is a good fit not just for the job you want them to take on, but also on an interpersonal level. Consider whether or not you’re comfortable trusting the person you’re visiting with to manage your project, and whether you feel as though you’ll be able to have effective communication throughout the job.
- Ask questions: If you have any questions about your project or about the contractor’s work, don’t be shy! Ask any questions you have—it helps to arm yourself with information so you can feel completely comfortable going into the project you have in store. Make sure the contractor has good experience, is reliable, is properly licensed and insured, that they’ll get all necessary permits and that they’re familiar with the building material you’ve chosen for the project.
